August 02, 2005New Toppers! Most folks weren't really in looooove with the new top photo around here so I've decided to continue experimenting. I might just start changing it every few weeks. The new photo is a detail from Homer Winslow's "The Bear Hunters" at the Smithsonian American Art Collection and the archive photo is Catlin's "Buffalo Hunters 2", also from there. I don't feel bad using them since the Smithsonian uses (in part) taxpayer money to buy these great artworks. So, do you like these better? Just a reminder: Many browsers (especially Internet Explorer) do NOT reload the style sheets when you visit a site you've been to before. If you are still seeing gray text on a black background, you need to pick a neutral site such as Yahoo, then go to preferences and empty your browser's cache. Then reload Alphecca and you'll find it much easier to read, with black text on a white background. Comments
I like the new one. That a Winchester he's holding, or a Henry? Hard to tell, but knowing the year might help. Posted by: Greg at August 2, 2005 12:08 PMThe Bear Hunters was painted in 1908. Posted by: Jeff Soyer at August 2, 2005 12:12 PMJeff - it's Great, Great, Great! Great Great Great but maybe throw the boobies in on occaison Posted by: countertop at August 2, 2005 01:24 PMI like it too, Jeff. But the name "Alphecca" makes even less sense when you don't have pictures of celestial bodies. A minor point. I like the painting. Posted by: Matt Groom at August 2, 2005 01:54 PMOh, yes! I like! Not as much as Say Uncles choice, of course, but... Posted by: JohnW at August 2, 2005 02:00 PMWell... I've admitted that the name Alphecca was a dumb one -- I originally planned on having a sci-fi blog. I COULD rename the blog! Both JeffSoyer.com and GayGunNut.com point directly at Alphecca.com (try them, there's not even a "redirect page") so no one would have to change any URLs and old posts linking to me could stay the same, too. But how do I convince the 300 bloggers who blogroll me to change my name on their rolls? And since Alphecca is near the top of many of the alphabetic ones... And my Google rankings would go down... Posted by: Jeff Soyer at August 2, 2005 02:22 PMLove the new topper. There might be some appropriate Remington and Russell images that are in the public domain by now, too. And what about the Pony Express rider that Winchester used to use in their ads? I think that goes back to the early 20th century, if not earlier, although it might be covered by a trademark (which doesn't expire.) Posted by: Kip at August 2, 2005 02:51 PMI really like the classic painting. And I'm going to guess that it's a Winchester, Winslow Homer had some beautiful Winchesters custom made and engraved by the factory - see RL Wilson's serious gun porn book 'Steel Canvas'. Posted by: Brent at August 2, 2005 04:57 PMLike the new black on white print and the use of old paintings for your toppers. Careful of the copyrights and trademarks though. Some anti would love to nail you on an infringement charge. Posted by: joated at August 2, 2005 06:23 PMThanks everyone. I specifically chose these paintings because they are really OLD and they are owned by the Smithsonian, a publicly funded and owned institution, meaning owned by us taxpayers. I therefore feel free to use their likeness in Alphecca. Posted by: Jeff Soyer at August 2, 2005 07:42 PMmmm... buffalo... Posted by: ewayte at August 2, 2005 11:11 PMLOVE 'EM! Posted by: Ken Summers at August 2, 2005 11:26 PMApologies on the Gun ID of a Winchester. I'm suffering from CRAFT (can't remember a freaking thing). I looked up my RL Wilson citation and it wans't W Homer's gun but Thomas Eakins. Posted by: Brent at August 3, 2005 11:54 AMhttp://menatch.cjb.at the comment input form disappears. Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that. By Golly, you're reading an archived post.
