"Books" Meme...

Matthew at Speculative Fiction has tagged-me as he propagates a meme about the books we read. (For those who don't know, he is also the proprietor of TriggerFinger.)

The questions asked are:

1. Total number of books owned
2. Last book bought
3. Last book read
4. Five books that mean a lot
5. Tag five people to continue the meme

All righty then... And the answers are:

1. Currently I probably have about a thousand books strewn around. Over my lifetime I've owned perhaps five times that amount but I give or donate a lot of books to free-up er, living space.

2. The last book I bought new (mostly I buy used books) was Michael Crichton's State of Fear. The most recent used one was a Perry Mason story, Erle Stanley Gardner's The Case of the Grinning Gorilla.

3. Most recent book read is an oldie, Jonathan Latimer's Murder in the Madhouse. Good, humerous, and for the time it was written, rather bawdy.

4. This is a tough one because there are so many that either were hugely entertaining or else quite thought-provoking. Robert A. Heinlein's Farnham's Freehold certainly forced one to consider "end of the world" scenarios. Robert Zubrin's The Case For Mars demonstrated that we could easily reach and colonize Mars. Roger A. Caras' Dangerous to Man scared the crap out of me with how many deadly animals there are in the world. Mark Twain's Letters from the Earth was feindishly clever and far advanced for it's time. Lastly, one of the plays (scripts) that still makes me laugh out-loud today, The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde absolutely savaged British society.

5. Hmmm, who to pass this meme onto... I won't list anyone here, specifically, since they might not be interested or are busy or some such thing. Instead, I'll throw the gauntlet out to the other bloggers who visit me and challenge them to continue it with their own posts.

You readers here are encouraged to post your own answers in the comments.

Comments

1. Probably about 2k right now.

2. John Ringo's "Into the looking glass"

3. John Ringo's "Into the looking glass"

4. Steve Perry "The man who never missed" if you have not read it, you must. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" which was my first the first real book and the one that started me on my reading adventure. Tom Clancy's "Without Remorse". Robert A. Heinlein's Collection as a whole. Bunch and Cole's "Sten" and the series that follows.

I know that was more than 5 but hey I read a lot... (I left out Richard Bach's "Illusions" but that was also a great one which left me with my most memorable quote.

Argue for your limitations, and sure enough, they're yours.

I guess no one else here reads...

I read... some. But I don't remember to check Alphecca every day. :(

I've got somewhere between 100 - 200 books right now, I think. Most are in boxes; I moved six months ago and am one of those people that doesn't unpack things until I use them. If you're feeling generous you can include my books at my parents' house, which just about doubles my total.

The last book I got (as a gift) was Terry Goodkind's Chainfire. The last book I bought (some time before that) was Robert Silverberg's Roma Eterna (which I bought with two other books I can't remember now). I, er, still haven't read it.

I finished Chainfire, and right now am on my way through Practical File System Design by Dominic Giampaolo (I'm a computer nerd).

I don't think I can name five. I'll jump on the bandwagon and say one of Heinlein's books; he was the first writer to get me thinking about social and economic issues with fiction. And who can argue with "an armed society is a polite society" (wish I knew where he first wrote that)? I really, really enjoyed Goodkind's Faith of the Fallen. Isaac Asimov's Foundation, which is a little bit awkward story, but it set the stage for one of the most famous science fiction sagas. Niven and Pournelle's The Mote in God's Eye was pretty good, too. That was the one that got me to start reading more Niven books after Ringworld turned me off to his writing. I guess I'd also add either the Gap series or the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant (both by Stephes R. Donaldson), both of which made me really uncomfortable by turning a rapist into a sympathetic character. But they're still good reads.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
