May 22, 2005Fighting For FreedomsI'm sure you'll all gasp in astonishment to learn that the Washington Post doesn't think much of attempts to restore gun rights in the District of Columbia:
See, I know that some of you agree that this is meddling with the concept of "home rule" but I don't. I consider this to be the restoration of the 2nd Amendment rights -- constitutional rights -- to a subjugated people. True, they don't have to live there if they don't want to but why should they be denied something the rest of us take for granted? What if the right of women or blacks to vote was left to a state-by-state initiative? What if freedom of the press was only permitted in some areas of the country? If the District's leaders refuse to honor all of the Bill of Rights, then others from elsewhere should try to change that injustice. If some in the District don't want guns in their home, then they don't have to buy one. That shouldn't give them the power to prevent others who DO want the ability, to protect themselves from the wolves at the doorstep. Somehow I have a feeling I'll get opposing comments about this one... By the way, there's something on that linked Washington Post page that crashes my version of Netscape. Be forwarned. Comments
If they'd allow concealed carry as well as guns in the home I still wouldn't consider living there, but I'd be far less worried about driving through DC in broad daylight. And, no, I don't drive through DC after dark, unless it's during rush hour. I'd absolutely love it if VA, DC, and MD all honored eachother's CCPs. Alas, I live in the real world, where there is no Santa Claus. Posted by: Lornkanaga at May 24, 2005 01:09 PMHome rule? Sorry, DC is a ward of the Congress and is not entitled to self-determination. DC governs itself, to the extent it does, solely at the sufferage of the federal government. It is not much different, in this respect, than Guam. What is different is that members of the government live, or, at the least, have to work there. THEY make the rules, not the indigenous people. Don't like it? Move. Just like the Guamanians do. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that. By Golly, you're reading an archived post.
