Rice Re-Affirms Gun Support

We've noted this before but Condi Rice has stated AGAIN (on Larry King) that she firmly supports the Second Amendment. From Yahoo/AP:

Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice, recalling how her father took up arms to defend fellow blacks from racist whites in the segregated South, said Wednesday the constitutional right of Americans to own guns is as important as their rights to free speech and religion.

In an interview on CNN's "Larry King Live," Rice said she came to that view from personal experience. She said her father, a black minister, and his friends armed themselves to defended the black community in Birmingham, Ala., against the White Knight Riders in 1962 and 1963. She said if local authorities had had lists of registered weapons, she did not think her father and other blacks would have been able to defend themselves.

[...]

Rice said she favored background checks and controls at gun shows. However, she added, "we have to be very careful when we start abridging rights that the Founding Fathers thought very important."

Rice said the Founding Fathers understood "there might be circumstances that people like my father experienced in Birmingham, Ala., when, in fact, the police weren't going to protect you."

"I also don't think we get to pick and choose from the Constitution," she said in the interview, which was taped for airing Wednesday night. "The Second Amendment is as important as the First Amendment."

That does it! Since all the TV talking-heads are already speculating about 2008, and as a mostly one-issue voter, I'm throwing my support behind Dr. Condoleezza Rice for President. That is, unless Glenn finally does pick up the gauntlet!

Seriously though, there are no appealing candidates standing out right now for the coming (well, in two years anyway) primaries. Rice has always struck me as far more moderate than many on her side of the aisle. While I am "pro-life" I am not rabidly so and can live with her being not rabidly "pro-choice". I suspect she could care less about banning "gay marriage" or other issues of the far-right and she's clearly comfortable with the notion of defending our nation from the mutants who threaten it.

There's no-one on the Democratic side that I could bring myself to vote for. Hillary? Not in this lifetime. Rudy? Hopelessly anti-2A.

So Condi: You go girl!

Update:
So it seems that while the AP reporter was at the taping and reported the facts of the full interview, CNN didn't like that "pro-gun stuff" and cut it out of the broadcast because they suck.

I said this (in response to a post on the same topic) on Gwa.45's site:

Rice-Sanford '08

Sanford is the current governor of SC.

She is moderate on abortion, which is why she might not get the Republican nomination. And as we just saw, is not moderate on gun control, so has no chance at the Democratic nomination.

I agree with you though - I am much more interested in reining in gun control than I am in the nuances of a woman's right to chose, etc. In other words, I am an abortion moderate, but fairly strong in my gun control views.

Me three.

I would vote for Ms. Rice in a heartbeat, for many reasons, not least of which is the cosmic joke on the Democrats that the first woman, minority president be a conservative Republican.

Posted by: Ray_g at May 12, 2005 11:07 AM

HL: For a minute there I thought you meant Fred Sanford. I was afraid I woul dhave to break the news to you that Redd Foxx died some years ago. I do think Lamont or Grady are still available to run, though.

A mystery -- I went to Larry King live website, and looked at the transcript. No mention of right to arms at all. No idea what's up here.

Posted by: Dave Hardy at May 12, 2005 12:08 PM

I kind of like Erlich from MD. He's totally ticking off the Dems and winning.
It's pretty funny to watch.
Erlich/Rice in 08 and 12, Rice/? in 16 and 20.

Posted by: Veeshir at May 12, 2005 12:19 PM

While I'd normally second your nomination in a red hot minute (because I really like Condoleeza Rice), the last time I seconded a presidential nomination it went nowhere. So this time maybe I should keep my mouth shut.

Posted by: Eric Scheie at May 12, 2005 12:24 PM

I'm with Dave.

There is simply no mention of the second amendment at all in the trascript from last night program.

Posted by: countertop at May 12, 2005 02:52 PM

It was purely coincidental that I came across the comment about the lack of mention in the Transcript. I've updated my post.

On another note, I had referenced an article by David T. Hardy in my post, then I come to find it was a David Hardy that noticed the lack of these quotes in the CNN Transcript. Odd.

I didn't see the show. Did any of you? Did she talk about the 2nd Amendment? If so, then maybe CNN (which is extremely anti-gun) decided to edit that part out of the transcript. Of course, that makes it sound like a conspiracy...

I hate to burst your bubble here, but it's well-known at Stanford that Condi is gay. She has no chance in the republican primary.

Posted by: Evan at May 12, 2005 05:47 PM

Evan -

First, why would that burst anyones bubble? Especially here, at the gay gun nuts blog? Who really cares? But of course, its also well known that she dated a certain college football coach the entire time she was at Stanford and well into her time with the Administration.

Seriously though, while I don't know her, I know enough people in the administration who do and they all confirmed the rumors about the football coach to me. I don't buy the gay stuff that seems to have originated on lefty blogs like Tom Paine.

Posted by: countertop at May 12, 2005 09:46 PM

Jeff Soyer, Bruce Hayden: The abortion debate essentially divides into two camps: One side says life begins at birth and the other says life begins somewhere between inception and birth.

You may not vote exclusively for that (i.e. a single-issue voter for abortion), but to say that you're moderate on the issue is rather a misnomer. Personally I'm strongly against abortion, particularly after the zygote becomes an embryo. But then again, if I was an American and the only presidential candidate against abortion is also against the right to bear arms, wants to severely curtail free speech, wants to significantly reduce the size of the military, etc. - I may vote for a "pro-choice" candidate if they are not militantly against illegalizing abortion.

Posted by: Rajan R at May 13, 2005 08:09 AM

From the interview:
MR. KING: You're not going to run for governor?
SECRETARY RICE: I really would like to go back to my life.

If she's serious about that, then there's no way she would run for US President, especially in 2008. Now, I suppose she might sit the next administration out, decide she wants to get back in the game, and maybe in 2012 or 2016 we can vote for Rice. But surely not in 2008.

Posted by: Matt at May 13, 2005 03:21 PM

Well, if'n you are interested in the Condi 2008 movement, come over to Americans For Dr. Rice. We don't for a moment believe that Condi isn't being groomed for the Big Girl's Chair, especially since Hillary is obviously the one who'll be running for the Donks.

We have heard the lesbian stuff, too. Didn't know what to make of it until countertop spoke of the football coach. Sounds to me like the guy who went from Stanford on to Notre Dame. Forget his name, now.

We at AFR are, at present kicking off a radio ad campaign in New Hampshire and Florida. We are on two stations, WNTK in New Hampshire and WKAT in Miami. We are rolling out a second New Hampshire station, WKXL in Concord next week. We are testing several radio commercial spots as prototypes for television ads to be used in the 2006 cycle next year. Go to the site for spot samples.

Naturally, Rice's position on RKBA is music to our ears.

Posted by: section9 at May 13, 2005 07:13 PM

ok knuckleheads let's talk is Condi Rice a lesbian or not each time she is in a interview they always refer back to her job and probe to find if she is dating someone I personally say she is gay and why won't a interviewer just come right out and ask or do they think they will be black/white balled in the media

Posted by: lady hb at May 13, 2005 10:37 PM

The bubble bursting is the reality that she's as close now (behind Cheney, Hasstert, & Stevens) to the Presidency as she every will be. The woman is gay and republicans don't like gay people. I can't put it more plainly.

Posted by: Evan Branigan at May 14, 2005 02:09 AM

Evan, only a few Republicans "don't like gays". I'd venture a guess that I have a mostly libertarian/republican readership and none of them (or very few) "don't like gays". Most could care less. Take a look at my (reciprocol) blogroll. There are a lot of "Blogs for Bush" on there, plenty of "Blogs for God", et al. They have no trouble blogrolling/linking to me.

Even if that were true, though, the right-wingers don't seem to have as big a problem with lesbians as they do with gay guys.

And think of the triangulation the Republicans could accomplish by nominating a black, lesbian, woman candidate. Heck, they'd out-democrat the Democrats with the special interest groups!
