Sen. Jeffords to Retire

VT Senator Jim Jeffords will not seek re-election when his term expires in 2006. From Yahoo/AP:

Sen. Jim Jeffords, who single-handedly upset the balance of power on Capitol Hill four years ago when he quit the Republican Party to become an independent, announced Wednesday he will retire at the end of his term next year, citing his own health problems and those of his wife.

The surprise announcement immediately triggered a scramble for Jeffords' seat, one of several that will be up for grabs in next year's midterm elections.

In recent months, Jeffords' family and his staff questioned whether the 70-year-old senator was physically and mentally up to a statewide campaign for a fourth term. He stumbled in a recent radio interview, and was confused about some of his votes. His wife, Liz, is battling cancer.

While I'm sorry for his wife, I'm very happy for Vermont. Maybe -- finally -- we can get someone to represent our state who reflects the overwhelmingly pro-2A sentiments of the populace here.

Socialist Congressman Bernie Sanders is mumbling something about taking a shot at the seat. Hopefully there'll be better candidates than that!

What do you mean, more pro 2A?

Vermont has the least restrictive laws concerning firearms in the country. Do you need to be strapped at the local school? Courthouse?

I don't follow your reasoning.

Yes, I'm pleased with Vermont's gun laws (or lack of them). Regarding Jeffords, I'm referring to getting a senator in Congress that will represent that attitue at the national level, that is: Working to prevent more NATIONAL gun control laws that would infringe on us here in Vermont. An example would be the now expired "assault weapons" ban. Another would be a national license or registration.

Sorry if I wasn't clear in the post.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
