April 16, 2005It's Not the Weapon...Along with a spate of recent high-profile (media wise) shootings, there have also been a bunch of baseball bat attacks. We already know about the 13-year-old boy who killed a 15-year with one at a ballgame. I was doing a search for "assault weapon" on Yahoo News and within the first 20 stories find one from Canada (#2) of a man killing his 78-year-old mother with a bat. Then there was the story (#7) of two white skin-head gang members accused of attempted murder with a baseball bat on another gangbanger. I was thinking (yeah, yeah, for a rare change) hmmm...; let's try a search for "assault baseball bat". I found incidents all over the country. So... Should we register or license baseball bats? Should we make our schoolyards baseball bat-free zones? Should Chicago and Washington DC and San Francisco have outright bans on them? Comments
Man, don't give 'em any ideas. Posted by: billy-jay at April 17, 2005 05:37 AMRemember, California and New York have ourlawed "martial-arts weapons"... most of which are (by any objective standards) FAR less deadly than a decent Louisville Slugger or tire iron. Boston wishes to ban machetes. And the roiginal AWB included a ban on bayonet lugs, of all things. Just because a ban is stupid, pointless, and not likely to help is no reason to think it might not occur. Posted by: DaveP. at April 18, 2005 01:29 PMthe comment input form disappears. Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that. By Golly, you're reading an archived post.
