February 21, 2005Gonzo Suicide
I have a couple books of his; collections of his articles. There are some things I very much agreed with, many that I didn't. Hunter S. Thompson never wrote "halfway". He floored the accelerator of his typewriter as he did his life in general. Love him or hate him, agree or disagree with him, he was never boring. For some reason I seem to remember reading recently that he was ill (physically) but I can't find any reference to it now. I suppose that many will say that suicide is "the coward's way out" but I like to think that he lived hard and played hard and with the hand that fate dealt him, he knew when it was time to fold... He had a back operation (for a painful problem) a while back, and there were some rumors about a bad heart (though I can't find anything definite on that last). A friend of mine once said, about another friend who killed himself (he did have reason): "Is it a cowards way out or a brave man's way in?" Good question. Any rate, I disagreed with him more than I agreed but I am sorry he's gone. Posted by: Kathy K at February 21, 2005 07:25 PMFor some reason I thought he had some kind of inoperable cancer - but haven't seen it in any reports Denver's "Rocky Mountain News" made sure to report that Thompson was a member of the NRA and had accidentally shot a staff member a few years ago while trying to chase a bear off the property. A "family friend" then went on to blather about how she expected this, what with all his "fully loaded" guns around. Posted by: OldeForce at February 21, 2005 08:59 PMI read that he was in a lot of pain after a hip replacement operation. One thing I'm sure of is that his "fully loaded guns" didn't "cause" the suicide. Posted by: Donna at February 22, 2005 06:38 AMthe comment input form disappears. Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that. By Golly, you're reading an archived post.
