February 18, 2005.25? No Thanks!A friend was getting rid of a couple guns to raise cash. He offered me a .25 caliber pistol for $100. I said, "no thanks". He dropped the price to $75, then $50. I said no. He finally asked what would I be willing to give him for it? I told him, I think .25 caliber ammo is the shittiest ammo ever created. It's weak, unreliable, inaccurate, worthless. I would never rely on a .25 for self-defense and a gun like that is no fun for target shooting because even clamped onto a bench-rest you're lucky if you hit the border of a target 7 yards away. He walked away dejected. Sorry, that's just how I feel. Comments
A .25 caliber revolver??? I don't know that I've ever seen one of those. Now I wished I lived in NH so I could buy it for $50... :) Posted by: Jay G at February 18, 2005 04:44 PMThat's what I get for typing these on the fly at work. It was, of course a .25 pistol by, I think, Astra. I didn't really look it over because I just don't consider buying guns like that. He had an S&W .357 magnum revolver also but I wasn't in the mood (or financial situation) to consider a purchase right now... Posted by: Jeff Soyer at February 18, 2005 05:14 PMYou made the right decision. Everything I've read places .25Auto as the worse pistol round ever....better off with 22LR or 22WMR. Inaccurate and ineffective in self-defense situation. Posted by: Ted B. at February 18, 2005 05:47 PMWell, I have a Colt .25 auto, which is my favorite pistol. Not for shooting, lordy no. But it belonged to my grandfather, who bought it in Chicago in 1926 before coming to Seattle, immediately after graduating from Northwestern. It's still in the original box, with the original owner's manual and cleaning brush. I've fired it, merely because one ought not own a firearm that one has not fired. Yeah, it's inaccurate and such a lightweight round that the only way to use it for defense would be to place the muzzle against your target's head. Even then, you'd likely just make him mad. If I wanted an inexpensive target pistol I'd get something in .22LR (I really, really like Beretta's U22 NEOS) But that cute little Barbie gun is my favorite pistol. Just not for shooting. Posted by: Steve Skubinna at February 18, 2005 06:13 PMWell, if he is still looking to sell it I'd be happy to buy it from him. The Astra .25s - while being .25s - are still very well built pistols, and in fact were imported by COlt for a short time when Colt stopped making theirs. I collect Astras so I have ulterior motives ... Posted by: emdfl at February 19, 2005 04:07 AMI believe they are useful for scaring the scarable (as the man said, (Barnes, I think) "Nobody wants to get shot.") That said, I had a neighbor once who said that he didn't notice having been shot by one of those until the morning after, on noticing an annoying large zit-like thing in his forearm. IIRC, he said he just popped the bullet out, washed the wound, and put a band-aid on the small hole. Of course, people *have* been killed by them. If that's all ya got, aim for the eyeball. From 1 foot. And empty the magazine. Posted by: Justthisguy at February 20, 2005 12:57 AMMy friend wound-up selling the gun to a dealer for (he says) $100. JTG: I remember as a kid being told that defensively, if you shoot someone with a .25, "that just makes 'em mad!" There was one case reported on the Internet a while ago in which a woman succesfully killed an assailant with 4 rounds from a .25 after he woke her from a nap by beating her so badly that the paramedics cheered to see that he was dead. Unfortunately I have searched more than once on her name as I remember it (Barbie Faust) and found nothing. Posted by: triticale at February 20, 2005 10:02 AMthe comment input form disappears.
