More on SF Handgun Ban

The Review Journal of Las Vegas has it right in this editorial:

The only major American city that prohibits private citizens from owning guns is Washington, D.C. -- and we all know our nation's capital has a reputation for being a pastoral, crime-free paradise.

And now the deep thinkers in San Francisco hope to follow suit.

On Tuesday, The Associated Press reports, five of the city's 11 city supervisors submitted a measure to the Department of Elections that would prohibit the ownership, "sale, manufacturing or distribution of handguns, and the transfer of gun licenses."

If voters approve the plan in November, residents would have 90 days to turn in their guns. Good luck.

There are some exceptions to the proposal. Law enforcement officers, members of the military and security guards "actually employed and engaged in protecting and preserving property or life within the scope of his or her employment" would be free to keep their weapons.

Oh, yes, and so would one more favored class: violent and petty criminals.

Well, at least the SF board of supervisors have given me plenty to talk about in next week's Weekly Report and on Cam Edwards...

Seems this has been discussed in great length over at the highroad. It also seems that the wonderful city of SF tried this in the very early 80s and it got knocked down. Seems some people are very ignorant of history or just would like to try their luck with the more liberal court system in Kalifornia now...

If I had to bet on this, I'd bet against it actually passing. If a city as crazy as SF can't get more than 5 of 11 "city supervisors" to think crazy sh*t like this up. I don't see it going anywhere.

That said, alot of people, esp. on the lunatic fringe, consider SF & California to be the "testbeds" for legislation for the rest of the country.

I'm so conflicted. Part of me wants to see this ridiculous law fail miserably. Another part of me wants to see it pass so the city's crime rate can go through the roof as in Washington DC. Then we will have even more ammo to use against the gun grabbers.

Jeff, it's nice to see a decent editorial, such as this one in the Lost Wages newspaper. You may already know this, but it shouldn't be a surprise that you see good stuff from that paper. One Vin Suprinowitz (sp?) is a hard-core libertarian, and he has his weekly column, but he may have written this short one. I think he's rubbing off on some of the others too.

Course, he won't get syndicated very widely, as his views conflict greatly with the usual journalists left-wing idiocy.

I've been reading his columns for about 3 years now. Pass the word ...

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
