Press Revs Up Hysteria Over AWB

The major media is wasting no time trying to scare people into pressuring Congress to renew the "assault weapons" ban. From the AP today:

With the federal ban on assault weapons set to expire next Monday, gun manufacturers are marketing military-style firearms and are ready to sell them as soon as Sept. 14, a consumer group said Tuesday.

"The gun industry is champing at the bit for the ban to expire," said Susan Peschin, firearms project director at the Consumer Federation of America, a nonprofit association of 300 consumer groups that released the study.

And from today's Washington Post:

The 1994 law banned the sale to civilians of 19 types of semiautomatic weapons, including semiautomatic versions of the Intratec Tec-9 pistol and Uzi submachine gun, but many manufacturers have been able to skirt the prohibition by offering knock-off models.

The Consumer Federation's assessment cites examples of recent sales pitches by gun manufacturers, which have indicated that they plan to revive models and features outlawed by the ban. Beretta has been offering customers two free 15-round magazines after Sept. 14 with the purchase of two of its weapons, according to an advertisement. The current law restricts the capacity of ammunition magazines to 10 rounds. The consumer group said manufacturers, including Israel Military Industries Ltd., which makes Uzi brand submachine guns, are likely to introduce semiautomatic models into the U.S. market if the ban is lifted...

...

...Robert A. Ricker, a former executive director of the American Shooting Sports Council who now serves as a consultant for groups that favor stricter gun controls, said gun manufacturers hope to capitalize on fears that the ban could be reintroduced at any time.

"You're going to see an incredible buying frenzy," Ricker said during a conference call with reporters yesterday. "Fall is the prime buying season for guns. . . . I think the gun industry's mantra is going to be 'Buy your wife a high-capacity magazine while you can.' "

A person reads these quotes and if they are not a firearms enthusiast, they probably don't realize there is a huge difference between an Uzi machine gun (which will stay illegal) and a semi-automatic version of the same gun that will operate just as all other legal guns operate. That is what these writers (and these are news stories, not editorials) are hoping will happen; the reader will panic and immediately pick-up the phone and call their representative.

This is also setting Bush up to take the blame and try to make this another campaign issue. Remember: ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, the New York Times, the New Yorker, WaPo, et al will stop at nothing to force a Kerry victory in November. They have long ago abandoned any pretense to objective reporting.

I might also add that the high-capacity magazine issue is nonsense and as I said Monday, I should have the same fire-power as the mutants who might attack me in my home or on a street in some urban area. So should you. So should anyone. If you have to stop to reload, that gives them an opening to kill you. Plus, it's a lot more fun at the range!

I expect the morning and nightly news programs will be pounding the drums over the AWB expiration for the next several days, with DiFi and the Brady Bunch all over our screens threatening anarchy in the streets. I still predict (or hope) that Republicans will keep the ban extension from reaching Bush's desk.

What can I say? We need to educate the public on these distinctions.

That is one good reason for the existence of your web site.

but many manufacturers have been able to skirt the prohibition by offering knock-off models

Isn't it great when firearms manufacturers comply with the law -- by removing the features that the gun banners demanded they remove -- they're accussed of "skirting" or "circumventing" the law?

Full-auto (class III) Uzis are NOT illegal, they are transferable under ATF form 4 per GCA '34 and NFA '86. The transfer tax is $200. Since NFA '86 fixed the number of civilian ownable class III weapons at about 177,000, a full auto transferable Uzi runs just under $10,000.

Plus, they are pretty much pieces of shit.

One of the ways I keep fighting these dumb gun laws is to ask everyone I meet who is offended by guns if they have ever fired one. Invariably, they say they haven't and have no interest. In most cases, my invitation to come to the range is usually disarming enough for them and they back down. The few who have agreed to come to the range have been pretty much converted. The rest I just confuse the heck out of as I disect any arguments they make.

When I can get someone to the range, this is what I do.

After showing them how to load and fire it I place my Glock 23 on the table.

I load up a 10 round magazine and I load up a 13 round mag. I tell them to go ahead and blast away. If they pick up the 13 round mag first, I tell them they are now holding an assault rifle. The look of shock is wonderful.

If they take the 10 rounder first, I wait till they then empty the 13 rounder and ask if they can tell what the difference was (most newbies don't count shots but just fire away in glee) and invariably they don't. I then say, well with one mag you were firing a legal gun and with the other a so called assault rifle.

This simple demonstration drives home how dumb this law. My next victim, a very well connected liberal from a powerful and long time Democratic family from Arkansas. He's a family friend and has finally agreed to go to the range with me next weekend (he doesn't know we are going to the NRA itself - hehehe)

You can buy hi-cap mags everywhere anyways. Damn these anti-gun people should be shot

Posted by: Uncle Mikey at September 9, 2004 06:31 PM

The Glock 23 is not a "rifle," and using a pre-ban magazine does not make it illegal.

The anti-gunners use enough distortion and deceits to get their point across; our side does not need to be adding to the confusion.

Posted by: Nobody Important at September 10, 2004 11:34 AM

What the hell is wrong with you? Why the hell do you need a damn machine gun to shoot deer or to "protect yourself"? If the law is renewed, you wouldn't have to worry about "mutants" having machine guns so you wouldn't need one either. How can we make America a safer place from terrorists if we allow damn machine guns to be sold LEGALLY?

I forgot to add this to my last speech... youall are all hicks and redneck losers! SCrew all of you!!

I dare you...

Posted by: Frankfurt Wright at September 16, 2004 09:58 AM

Earth to Frankfurt, Earth to Frankfurt: The AWB didn't ban machine guns nor does it's demise mean that we all can run out and buy machine guns. Machine gun ownership has a whole different set of rules tightly regulated by the federal government. Those rules were set way back in the 1930's and are still in place. You dink.

Congrats on the Troll Jeff.

I had forgotten about making these comments, but thought I should clarify them.

My mistake for using the term "assault rifle" as opposed to assault weapon in the post. Reardless, the meaning and intent is the same and I don't think it distorts anything. The AWB prevented me from buying a new 13 round magazines. The increase in firepower between that and a 10 rounders is miniscule. After firing both, most people come to terms with how ridiculous the AWB was.

"Come on... Say something to me.."

"I dare you..."

C'mon, Frank, we're bloggers. We don't sit around waiting for people to write comments so we can reply to them. That went out with online journals.

Instead we endlessly scroll around, looking for other blogs that mention and link to our own.

Get it right.
