July 02, 2004Personal ResponsibilityPeople love to blame others for their woes. That seems to come naturally. And historically, blame can be placed on bigotry and prejudice. But there comes a time when some personal responsibility is necessary too. Comedian Bill Cosby is imploring Black People to do just that. He did it last May, and he's just done it again:
There's a lot more so read the whole thing. But failure to examine oneself isn't confined to just the black community. You can go to plenty of poor white communities where the fault always seems to lie elsewhere. Workers laid-off who themselves bought only cheap imports. Who shack-up without assuming responsibility for any children produced. Or they blame immigrants who are willing to take the hard jobs at low pay that others aren't. The gay community could use a Bill Cosby too. After all these years and with what we now know, according to the CDC, there are still a LOT of gays having anonymous, unprotected sex in areas such as San Francisco, where AIDs cases are again rising. The "left" could use a Cosby. The "right" could use a Cosby. And all these people rushing off to trial lawyers to win the litigation lottery could use a Cosby. Woes I... Update: The Hobbesian Conservative has more. Comments
Good for him. I need a Cosby, too. I need to be my own Cosby. I am responsible for what I do or don't do. I am the cause of my own effects. It's my life and it's I who choose how I live it. I am a free man. Posted by: Steven Malcolm Anderson at July 2, 2004 12:19 PMI saw this article in this morning's paper. The picture that went with it was priceless for the look on Jesse Jackson's face. If the idea that people are responsible for their own actions took hold his gravy train/shakedown syndicate (aka Rainbow Push) would lose its power. Posted by: Aubrey Turner at July 2, 2004 02:47 PMthat was good. We could all take a bit more personal responsibility. I think that we rely way too much on the system to do for us...and those in the system like things just the way they are so no change is forth comming...why rock the boat.??? Me too, DRC. In fact, I'm so weary of whiners that just as soon as I recognize one, I usually jump on my mouse and ride!!! Posted by: Indigo at July 3, 2004 06:39 PMYou nailed that one. It would be a novelty for people to see responsibility as a personal obligation as opposed to a means to shifting blame to anyone else. Posted by: Cerberus at July 4, 2004 07:45 AMFrom what I've read of her book so far, it seems to me that Tammy Bruce could very well be the gay community's Cosby. I'm reading "The Death Of Right And Wrong" and she addressed the issue with some emphasis. the comment input form disappears. Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that. By Golly, you're reading an archived post.
