Saudi Arabia to Allow CCW's

I don't know if it will help things there but at least foreign workers now have some sort of chance against attackers. From Tiawan News:

Foreign residents of Saudi Arabia will be allowed to carry guns, the police minister announced after a series of militant bombings, attacks and kidnappings targeting Western workers in the kingdom.

"In principle, a citizen has the right to carry a licensed weapon, and so does the resident. If he senses danger, he can carry a personal weapon as he does in his country," Prince Nayef said late Wednesday.

A Western diplomat had said some embassies and foreign companies had asked Saudi authorities to ease rules barring private security guards from carrying weapons. Nayef's comment appeared to be a response to the requests.

Under Saudi law, foreigners - even security guards - cannot have weapons, while Saudis must apply for a permit. Nayef's comments suggested foreigners would be allowed to seek permits, though he did not elaborate.

Man, I don't care how good the money is, you couldn't get me to work in the Middle East for anything, these days. And a gun is useless against a car-bomb.

If you went to Saudi Arabia, they'd cut off your head for being a man's man. The only countries in the Near/Middle East that are free are Israel and Turkey. Lebanon used to be free and prosperous and pro-Western also, until the PLO wrecked it.

I'd never go to that center of terrorism and cesspool of totalitarianism known as Saudi Arabia for anything -- on principle.

You would be amazed at the number of American companies doing business in Saudi Arabia.

When my company offered me a year tour to help support a missile program, I said no. This effectively stopped my chances of career advancement, but I had factored that into my decision. Seven years later I retired with no regrets.

However, many aren't in a position to say no. They have families, medical bills, mortgages, and other responsibilities. They must go. Just like a soldier, they really don't have a choice.

I wish those who do go a uneventful tour and hope for their safe return.

OK, so is a Saudi CCL reciprocal? With Iraq? Israel? Texas? France? Yemen? NYC? England? Or should a host of states get on the bandwagon and recognize Saudi CCLs. Vermont and Alaska already DO....by default...
Let's get cracking here!

Note: Comments close down on posts after seven days and then
the comment input form disappears.

Your comments are welcome. You don't need to enter a URL and you don't need a "valid" email address, either. Note though that MT Blacklist is installed to flag suspiciously spam-like strings. Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
