Wolf Ammo Sucks...

...Well, that's just my opinion. I've been breaking in a new gun (more on that later this weekend) and I picked up four boxes of various 230gr .45 FMJ. One box was Wolf Ammo. I'd heard of it but never tried it, and now I'm sorry I did. It leaves so much crappy residue everywhere, plus, the flecks of the case coating seemed to be all over the chamber. I ran the box anyway but then felt much better switching to the Union and also my friend's Winchester. Anyone else have similar experience with Wolf?

Hi Jeff,
Like you, I had heard of Wolf ammo and saw some in .45 caliber at a very good price. I tried it in an indoor range and it actually produced a foul smell. When I cleaned the gun I found a large amount of fouling, some evidence of unburned powder, and it took about twice as long to clean the gun than usual. On the other hand, it was reliable and cheap, but I would not use it again unless I had no other choice (and I have plenty of choices ;-)

Never tried their pistol ammo but their rifle (i used 5.56MM) works fine.

Posted by: SayUncle at June 25, 2004 09:17 AM

I've always had good results with the Rifle ammo as well.

I've fired both pistol and rifle ammo from Wolf. It's dirty and it stinks, but for their prices I don't complain.

I think that the best value for pistol ammo (if you don't like Wolf) is CCI Blazer. Try natchezss.com and check out their Blazer prices. If you buy by the case and half-case you can sometimes get a discount.

Jeff, it'd be mail order for you, but do try T's Guns & Ammo of Texas City, TX.

They manufacture new and reloaded ammo to the tune of well into the hundreds of thousands of rounds per month. Good stuff too, in my experience.

A bag of el-cheapo .45 ACP 230gr. ball reloads runs about $19.00 per 100 rounds. They'll gladly fax you an entire price list. Sadly, they're not up on the web yet.

I've shot a lot of CCI Blazer, it's available everywhere and I have bricks of it for my .22 and 9mm. I like it a lot.

Jim, thanks, I might try them but I'm heading to Wal-Mart next week to see what deals they have.

Wolf knows how to make precisely one cartridge: The 7.62x39mm

That's because what is today Wolf was the ammo manufacturer for the Soviets before the wall came down. They can make ammo that kalashnikov rifles (and knock offs, or kalashnikovnockovs as I like to call them) but they can't make a nato cartridge to save their bippies.

AND FOR THE LOVE OF G-D DON'T BUY CCI 22! If you're going to Walmart anyway, buy a box of 550 Federal Copper Plated hollowpoints! A box goes for around ten bucks, and it's the cleanest, most accurate 22 ammo on the market. CCI works well enough, if you don't mind swabbing your barrel for two hours after you've put a hundred rounds through it.

Buy it by the case, and save $$$

I've used a lot of Wolf ammo over the years, but I've stopped using it of late. My main complaint was that it was very dirty. It left a lot of residue in the gun that took forever to clean. There's also the issue of the lacquer-coated steel cases. That lacquer gets hot and melts onto the chamber, leaving the residue behind.

As for CCI Blazers, that aluminum case scares me a bit. When I was originally breaking in my Kimber, I found some spent casings that were split. That worried me enough that I don't use them anymore.

These days I tend to spend a little extra and get Sellier and Bellot or PMC.

The .223 works fine, and at 6 cents a round, you can't beat it with a new hammer. Especially through a Mini-14.

Posted by: Tim at June 26, 2004 11:13 PM

I purchased Wolf 223 ammo and fired it through a brand new Bushmaster and experienced jamming and "double feeding" I have over 400 rounds that I will not use and it was a learning experience and I will never purchase the ammo again.

I enjoy shooting wolf ammo through my Saiga 7.62.
It shoots great and I don't get a lot of mess to clean up.

Posted by: Brandon at August 12, 2004 02:11 PM

I have used 9mm and 7.62x39 and never had any problems. I have a HI-POINT 9mm and a Saiga.

In two years I have put 3500+ rounds of Wolf .223 through my Colt AR, and the ONLY malfunction EVER... was due to a crappy USA mag.(that went in the trash.) If you are odor sensitive, take up golf.

My new armalite AR-15 A4 does NOT like wolf. I even have problems with dry cycling the ammo!!! it sticks in the chamber. Thank god I have a strong extractor.

When I noticed the sticking problem I thought I just had a fowled chamber/locking lugs. I went to store and got a new chamber brush and sat down for about 2 hours and cleaned it to the point I could use it for surgery, and I still had the problem. I started to think I had a problem with the gun. Fortunately I had a box of premium federal that I loaded up and it cycles like a dream.
I have no clue what would cause the wolf ammo to stick in the chamber when dry cycling.

You have to remember that from time to time these plants tend to have hicups!! Yes even good ammunition manufacturers will tend to be bad here and there!! No life is not perfect nor anything else. Wolf ammo thru my AK in .223 and 7.62 in SKS has always cycled good!

Posted by: Krazy4HandK at October 14, 2004 08:51 PM

I have used 9x18 and 7.62x39 by wolf for a couple of years, not problems with cycling, but I have to agree that it is a little dirtier than Sellier and Bellot for example (Makarov ammo).

My father-in-law uses 9mm Wolf in his Taurus PT99
with great results. In fact it is the ONLY ammo that cycles perfectly at all times, we tried Winchester, Sellier&Bellot, some reloaded ammo, and his Taurus really likes Wolf, no misfeedings or failures to eject like with brass cased ammo by at least 4-5 different brands.

No experience with .223, i heard some people have sticky situations in the chamber because of very tight design - small tolerances, unlike SKS where this kind of problem doesn't exist.

Posted by: Sam at October 24, 2004 07:30 PM

I shot about 300 rounds of wolf .223 in my new bushmaster, with no problems. It sure does leave lots of red residue from the crap near the primer, but I just clean my weapon after firing it. If people are too lazy to spend a little extra time cleaning, then spend the extra money for more expensive ammo. As far as the sticky situations with the small tolerances.. I had none, but that's why they invented the forward assist.
