Instant Cripple...

I have gout. Usually it's kept well under control with Allopurinol. In fact, I haven't had a bad episode in almost a year. So yesterday I got careless, made meatloaf, and ate almost the whole thing. Boy was that stupid. Now my right knee is toast and I can't bend it. I can't even walk down the stairs or drive my car. Gout comes on lightning fast, little crystals digging into the joints of my foot or toe or knee.

So I've just taken a triple dose of Allopurinol, I'm drinking cherry juice (I keep a bottle in the fridge for emergencies like this) and maybe this will go away as quickly as it came...

So I'm blogging from a position of lying on my living room couch with the keyboard and mouse. The iMac is sitting on my coffee table about two feet away. It's clumsy but there isn't anything else I can do. I have a feeling that propping myself up on my elbows will get old real fast.

It's amazing how quickly gout can "cripple" me. And then, when it's good and ready, it ends and it's as if nothing happened. Just one more slice of my boring life for you to contemplate...

Increasing the dose of allopurinol during an acute flare is risky, as it can transiently increase the uric acid concentration, making the gout worse. It would be safer to take some indomethacin until the flare subsides, then consider increasing the dose of allopurinol.

Just a thought.

Now that I think of it, I think you're right, my doctor probably told me that a million years ago when I was first diagnosed. Now Indomethacin just doesn't work for me. Advil will, but not when the flare-up is bad, just after, as things subside.

Anyway, it was my own fault for going nuts (another no-no for me) over the meatloaf.

Jeff, I am sorry to hear that you're suffering from gout. I have had it myself and the pain was nearly unbearable. Literally crippling. I probably have no business telling you this, but what worked for me was some dog medicine I had lying around called Phenylbutazone (trade name "Butazolidine"). Not used much in humans these days, but I learned about it in the 1977 Merck Manual. I am not advising it (because I'm not a doctor and it can be risky in some cases), but I used it sparingly and it worked like a charm for me.

It's especially good for patients intolerant of Colchicine. Bear in mind the Merck Manual's warning: "Thrombocytopenia and agranulocytosis are complications which occur less frequently with such brief periods of drug administration."

Best of luck!! And thank you for your wonderful inspiration!

Unfortunately, because of the bastard spammers, the strings "google.com" and "yahoo.com" (even in your email address) are currently banned as well. So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
