Ship Carrying Guns Seized

Reader Noah D. sent me a link to a New York Post story about a huge cache of "assault weapons" on a ship being seized by Italian authorities. Here's a quote:

A Turkish ship headed for New York - and stuffed with thousands of Kalashnikov assault rifles and AK-47s - was seized en route in Italy, authorities said yesterday.

The ship's deadly hoard of more than 7,500 terrorist-grade rifles and machine guns worth more than $6 million was discovered illegally hidden under piles of properly labeled arms in several massive cargo containers, Italian officials said.

The ship MS Adnan Bayraktar, which bears a Turkish flag, had come from the Romanian port of Constanta and was on its way to a stopover in New York when the bust was made, the authorities said.

Documents showed the cargo containers were ultimately headed to a large U.S. company based in Georgia.

Officials refused to identify the business, citing security concerns and the ongoing investigation...

... The weapons' bayonets were still affixed to them, as were cartridges that can hold up to 30 rounds, they said.

The AK-47s had been tampered with so they couldn't be rapidly fired, but the modification was one that could easily have been reversed, authorities said.

The assault weapons are a favorite with terrorists: Osama bin Laden sported one in the now-infamous footage of him taken after 9/11.

I don't really know what to make of this story and I've seen no mention of it elsewhere. Ignoring the anti-gun bias (rather hysterical in places) of the story, what was the purpose of this large store of guns?

Was a distributor obtaining them in hopes of selling them after the phony "assault weapons ban" expires in the Fall? Were they destined for Islamic terrorist cells within the United States? Unfortunately, customs officials are not releasing much information yet.

Irregardless of why the ship was heading to N.Y., I suspect the anti-gun crowd will seize on this story to prop-up their arguments as to why the AWB should be extended.

If any of you have more info on all of this, please enlighten all of us with comments.

well, about all that I can glean from the often re-hashed AP story on Google News
http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&c2coff=1&tab=wn&newsclusterurl=http://www.ajc.com/news/content/news/0404/21guns.html
is that they were "combat grade", whatever the f*ck that is.

Per the NY Post, they were purchased by Century Arms International, and bound for their warehouse in Fairfax, VT. I also saw the phrase "terrorist grade" wtf?
WHile the AK is an acceptable for close combat and untrained users, I'd trade all 7500 of them for one Barret M-82.

The hysteria in the article comes from a breathtaking level of firearms ignorance on the part of the authors of this story;

*Referring to AK47s and "Kalashnikov rifles" as if they were distinct from each other.

*The use of the term "terrorist grade rifle" is a real head scratcher to me. Would a Remmington 870 be a "Redneck grade" firearm?

*The bit about semi-auto rifles being "easy" to convert to full auto gives me pause.

*And the pernicious use of the phrase "assault weapon."

Sometimes I wonder if the media is really anti gun, or if they're just really stupid. This is not to say, of course, that the two are mutually exclusive.

Greg: I would have to pick "C"- both of the above.

I found that, which says:

"Italian investigators suspect the weapons were destined for an international organization of arms traffickers."

Not very useful, but it's more than what was in the Post...

Thanks, Jeff - I'll hazard a guess here, and it may very well be based in stark ignorance. The pile of guns may have been 'parts guns', as that seems to be something that makes money for Century Arms - their FALs, for example.

The NYPost article is...honestly, I don't have words for how bad and biased it is.

The guns are friendlies. CAI imports these all the time. Check out this discussion: http://1083031022.v3.net

So are strings such as "cialis" (a common spam) which rules out words such as "socialism". Try putting a hyphan in a word like that.
