It may not be for credit but it’s a credit to Weber State University. From WKLS TV:
Some professors are packing heat and maybe some students too. A class in Weber State University’s Continuing Education Program is specifically aimed at getting people on and off campus to carry guns.
Classroom instructions are given by a professor of anthropology, who doubles as a concealed weapons instructor. Ron Holt says, “I see carrying a concealed weapon as a kind of life insurance policy: 99.99 times you’ll never need it, but if you ever do need it, you’ll probably really need it.”
This continuing education class at Weber State is not for credit. It’s open to off-campus folks too, as long as they’re at least 21 years old and meet legal requirements for a gun permit.
Needless to say, the reporter sought out negative reaction — from a different college campus.
Nonetheless, the editorial board of Alphecca (that would be me and two cats) all think it’s a swell idea. It doesn’t mean that you can or will stop a tragedy but it does mean you might.
It’s about time a college started teaching about the civil right that dares not speak it’s name. . . .

Well, it’s a start I suppose.

Weber State alum here.
Weber is non-traditional school in the sense that most of its studentbody lives off campus and commutes in. As you can tell, that gives both faculty and students more of a real-world perspective.
The University of Utah is a Berkeley wannabee institution, more of a traditional school with alot of on-campus students in the 18-22 range. The U fought Utah’s pre-emption law that required them to allow concealed weapons. Surprisingly, the Utah Supreme Court upheld the law, and the U had to grudgingly allow concealed weapons on campus.
And just a minor nitpick, the TV station is KSL, the local NBC affiliate. Not WKLS.

Given where I teach, I’m totally convinced that some of my students are packing, and not the ones I’d prefer, either. Seems only fair for me to get to have some self-defense. Although, if I had to guess, I’d guess that two or more guys would go after each other and not innocent bystanders. OTOH, they mostly can’t shoot straight, so there’s that to worry about.
Also, some of my students are cops, and I’d be really, really surprised if they weren’t armed.

FWIW, the local community college here offers a CHL class and (i think -it been a while) a ladies only CHL class. Of course this is in Texas.

Echoing Captain Holly, I would add that U of U is in Salt Lake City, which is pretty much the only place in Utah where you can find liberals. Had they gone to Utah State University in Logan, they probably would have had students proudly show off their concealed weapons permits. As far as the student body goes, Utah State is pretty much a branch campus of the Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies. The reporter most likely sought reaction at U of U because it’s a heck of a lot closer to the KSL headquarters in Salt Lake. Why send someone 2 hours’ drive to Logan, when you have a university already at hand?
