State Sen. Ernst is vying for the Republican nomination to run for Senator. Let’s hope she wins. From the Quad City Times:

In answer to a viewer question about a string of high-profile shootings and an Ernst ad that shows her with a gun at a firing range, the state senator referred to the California attack and said she would stand firm for the 2nd Amendment.

“Just because of a horrible, horrible tragedy, I don’t believe we should be infringing on people’s 2nd Amendment rights,” she said.

On Friday, Pia Carusone, senior adviser at Americans for Responsible Solutions, the gun violence prevention group founded by former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords, who was shot by a constituent in 2011, called for an apology.

“The extreme views of politicians like Joni Ernst are an insult to all Second Amendment supporters and those Americans who cherish the rights and traditions of responsible gun ownership,” she said.

In an emailed statement from the campaign Friday, Ernst said: “As I have said repeatedly, this was a terrible tragedy. It is reprehensible to me that the Democrats are trying to play gotcha politics with a tragedy like this. It’s shameful and I won’t stand for it.”

But, that’s all Democrats have; gotcha politics, the politics of outrage, and when they have no serious answer to policy arguments, they simply shout, “racism!”
