Now that Entergy has thrown in the towel against the eco-nuts of Vermont and announced that they will be shutting down the Yankee Nuclear Power Plant next year, I’m sure that all the crunchy-granola types here will be dancing in the
dark streets. The result of the closure will result in higher electric bills, loss of jobs, and increased CO2 in the atmosphere. From a scathing article in Forbes:
Vermont Yankee produced almost 200 billion kWhrs, did not emit the 55 million tons of carbon, sulfur and nitrogen it would have were it fossil, contributes about $500 million to the local economy employing 600 highly skilled professionals and funding the 1,800 indirect jobs associated with them. This closure will be a huge blow to the local economy. Does that not matter to ideologues?
While about 30% of Vermont’s electricity comes from hydro and methane digesters, without nuclear power the State’s GHG emissions will increase, especially as natural gas use for power generation is increasing faster than any other source.
