A woman accidentally discharged her gun and shot herself in the hand Thursday night inside the Staples store in Wake Forest.
She took a required gun safety class last Spring and received her North Carolina CCW permit in July. Maybe she should have taken the safety class twice.
Personally, I just can’t imagine not being totally aware of the state of one of my guns, where it is, or just plain ignoring the basic safety rules. Possibly that’s because I went through the NRA safety program three successive years at summer-camp when I was a young teen. As with learning anything, it takes hold far more completely when you’re young. That’s one reason kids learn second languages or computer programming more quickly than adults do.
All the more reason to bring back gun safety programs to our schools. Elementary, middle, I’m not sure at exactly the age but I think the younger the better.
