In a ridiculous article in NY Magazine, the author writes this:
As Gawker reported in February, the NRA routinely collects gun permit data from state and county offices. According to BuzzFeed, the database also includes the names of people who take gun-safety classes taught by NRA-certified instructors, gun show attendees, gun magazine subscribers, and others. The names are collected without people’s knowledge or consent, and the NRA refused to discuss the database.
I guess the NRA must be the first case of a special interest group purchasing the names of potential members. It’s called marketing and in actuality, it’s done all the time. Subscriber lists are offered for sale by almost every magazine in the business. Heck, most state DMV’s and car companies sell such lists, too.
Also, since gun safety classes taught under the auspices of NRA (via certified instructors) are issued certificates by the NRA, why, I guess it makes sense that the NRA wants to know who these new gun owners are.
Lastly, there’s a huge difference between a newspaper collecting gun permit data in order to publish that data for an anti-gun agenda, and the NRA collecting that data so they can send “Join the NRA” mailings to the permit holders.
Anti-gunners have come up with a bunch of meaningless non-issues to try to get gun owners to reject groups such as the NRA.
