Furthermore, if “assault weapons” really do pose an intolerable threat to public safety, why does Feinstein allow millions of them to remain in circulation by letting current owners keep them? She says this grandfather clause “protects the rights of law-abiding citizens who use guns for hunting, household defense or legitimate recreational purposes.” That claim is rather confusing, since Feinstein and her allies have been assuring us for two decades that “assault weapons,” which are very popular yet rarely used by criminals, have no legitimate uses.
