Petition: Create “Gun Free Zones” Around Politicians
I’m probably late to the table in reporting this but from the “We the People” web site at the White House, here’s a petition I could sign:
Eliminate armed guards for the President, Vice-President, and their families, and establish Gun Free Zones around them
Gun Free Zones are supposed to protect our children, and some politicians wish to strip us of our right to keep and bear arms. Those same politicians and their families are currently under the protection of armed Secret Service agents. If Gun Free Zones are sufficient protection for our children, then Gun Free Zones should be good enough for politicians.
There are currently about 31 thousand signatures on it, which surpasses the 25K threshold for requiring a response from the White House.
So, why didn’t I sign the petition? Because you have to register at the site to sign a petition. Sounds like citizen registration to me and if you do register, now they have a list of gun nuts like me to go after when the confiscations start.

I think if the secret service were allowed only the arms that hold seven rounds, as Bloomberg wants, the legislators would soon get the message.

Great teacher response to NRA’s suggestion that we should give teachers guns:
“You want to arm me? Good. Arm me with a school psychologist who has time to do more than test and sit in meetings about testing.
Arm me with enough counselors so we can build skills to prevent violence, have meaningful discussions with students about their future & not merely frantically adjust student schedules like a Jenga game…
Arm me with social workers who can thoughtfully attend to a student’s & her family’s needs so I. Can. Teach.
Arm me with enough school nurses so that they are accessible to every child and can work as a team with me rather than operate their offices as de facto urgent care centers.
Arm me with more days on the calendar for teaching & learning and fewer days for standardized testing.
Arm me with class sizes that allow my colleagues and I to know both our students and their families well.
Arm my colleagues & I with the time it takes to improve together & the time it takes to give great feedback to students about their work & progress.
Until you arm me to the hilt with what it will take to meet the needs of an increasingly vulnerable student population, I respectfully request you keep your opinions on schools and our safety to yourself NRA. Knock it off.

Gene,
Back in the day Secret Service used to carry six-shot revolvers. As reliable semi auto technology improved, guns got lighter, defensive ammo got more reliable, etc., they switched over to Sigs and such. Classical “one for me but none for thee.”

I also did not sign this petition for precisely the same reasons.
That we must hesitate whatsoever speaks to all that is currently fubar.
Brutal.
