CA: Anti-Gunnies Shocked by AG Jerry Brown
Actually, in a way, so am I. From SFGate:
In July, before the court agreed to take the case, Brown went so far as to file his own friend-of-the-court brief asking that Chicago’s gun ban be overturned - arguing that if the court doesn’t act, “California citizens could be deprived of the constitutional right to possess handguns in their homes.”
His stance has angered a number of gun control proponents.
Julie Leftwich, legal director of Legal Community Against Violence, said this isn’t simply about Brown defending the Second Amendment - it also marks a dramatic turnabout from the administration of his Democratic predecessor, Bill Lockyer, a staunch gun control advocate.
“Jerry Brown hasn’t shown leadership in the legislative arena related to the issue of gun violence prevention … and he hasn’t sponsored or weighed in on any significant gun bills,” Leftwich told The Chronicle’s Carla Marinucci.
So I guess that according to Leftwich, the only plausible leadership an Attorney General could demonstrate on gun control is to support the complete ban on gun ownership.
For once, Brown is simply supporting the Constitution.

Mr. Brown is an old fashioned liberal on this issue. I’ve personall chatted with him about it and the Amicus speaks for itself. Leftwich had to deal with the en banc 9th Circuit telling her that her little Alameda wasn’t well placed disagreeing with the AG of California on Incorporation.
Also, this does very little to help him win the Governorship. At the time he wrote the Amicus his most likely contender was Gavin Newsome as no Republican can win this cycle in California. Gavin’s anti-gun nature is well known and this would on balance help Gavin. However, it is and always has been a shoo-in for Brown, so this is not an attempt to do something other than something principled.
It will be easy for him to be more pro-gun than Schwarzenegger who signed the .50BMG ban and the Ammo internet ban…

Nobody should be surprised at anything that Jerry Brown does. Although I have often disagreed with his positions, he was the most independent-minded governor I have known. I would not assume that Brown would be likely to roll back any of the stupid existing California laws, but he will not be worse than The Arnold. Where would the Republican candidates stand? Who knows, their handlers haven’t told them yet.

Moonbeam though often waaaaay out their in left field has always spoken his mind and his beliefs. Though often wrong, he cannot be reliably accused of pandering.
I wouldn’t vote for him, but I have never had reason to doubt his integrity, though I have often questioned his sanity.
