Burlington, VT: Proposal to Ban “Assault Weapons”
Since Vermont has a state preemption over local gun ordinances, I’m not sure how this could happen, although the article does say that the state legislature would have to vote on it so, maybe, that’s the way an exemption is granted. The City Council resolution passed 10-3. From CNN:
But most people at Monday’s city council meeting spoke out against the resolution, calling it too broad and unwarranted, according to CNN affiliate WPTZ. Burlington Police Chief Michael Schirling said most gun crime in the city involves handguns, not assault weapons, WPTZ reported.
Plus, you instantly make criminals out of anyone already owning one who lives in Burlington, or drives through the city with one in their trunk.

Hmm, you thinking this will apply a little more to Marine veterans and organic farmers than it does to onscreen media talent? Because “equality before the law” isn’t the same as “equality after the law.”
So we’re having that “conversation.” Next up, we’ll converse on the rest of the amendments. You know, women voting, puttin y’all back in chains, quartering troops (why not? They’re already decimated). Notice how the Second always comes first in these conversations.
“The people have a right to bear arms for the defence of themselves” is from 1777. Should be no problem shredding that, hell most of us weren’t in high school yet. Why should we care? The Meghan codicil.

City councils love posturing*. Which is all this is.
(* Otherwise they’d have to admit they’re basically powerless over anything of import, which the sort of people who become city councilmen can’t abide..)
