Controversy Over Les Baer Move
Two firearm manufacturers are planning to leave Illinois and move to (possibly) Iowa. The City Council of La Claire has welcome arms [Another bad pun!–ed.] but some of the residents as well as the local state anti-gun group are fighting the move:
The Illinois law, which appears headed toward passage, would make it illegal for Les Baer to run his gun factory near Rock Island, Ill., where he and his 14 employees produce high-caliber pistols and assault rifles. So Baer looked for room in Le Claire, just over the Mississippi River, to set up shop.
“It’s close,” he said of the proposed location, nearly three acres of commercially zoned wooded area. “My employees are very much in favor of this move.”
Le Claire city officials welcomed the idea with offers of tax breaks and cheap land to help Baer get started.
That’s when a local former minister and his wife stepped in.
J. Elmer Brunk and Cynthia Vaughan upped the ante with a higher bid for the property. Their offer put the City Council squarely in the middle of what has turned into a small-town Second Amendment debate that has attracted a group wanting to reduce gun violence.
“What is the state of Iowa doing by allowing that kind of business to come here?” Vaughan asked.
[…]
The group Iowans for the Prevention of Gun Violence in Cedar Rapids has spearheaded an effort to stop the land sale to Baer. Spokesman John Johnson said a plant that customizes semiautomatic rifles and handguns sends a negative message to visitors and townsfolk alike.
“Every feature on the guns are designed for mass killing, so does it make sense to sell these to the general public?” Johnson asked. “Semiautomatic weapons are designed for combat. A military weapon is designed for mass killing.”
Leah Woodward, executive director of the group called Baer’s company “Illinois’ garbage” at a packed two-hour council meeting earlier this week. Woodward said assault weapons manufacturers in Illinois “are getting kicked to the curb, and for good reason.”
This is the kind of mentality the left has. A good, well run business manufacturing a legal product, offering high paying jobs, is called “garbage” by a state anti-Bill of Rights group’s spokesman. As for hurting the “image” of a town, that’s just ridiculous. Firearm companies tend to draw enthusiasts and other visitors looking for a tour, which means additional tourist dollars being spent in town at restaurants, gas stations, motels, and so on.
As the article points out, Les Baer makes expensive stuff, not cheap so-called “Saturday Night Specials” but it wouldn’t matter if they did. Iowa, as with many mid-west states, has seen a loss of manufacturing jobs and any legal business that could move in and provide new ones should be welcome.
ArmaLite is also looking to move from Illinois. This is all due to the ridiculous legislation moving forward in that state, and that Gov. Rod Blagojevich, fool that he is, will sign, that would prevent the manufacture of many popular guns. He, of course, is doing everything he can to lose jobs for that state and to negate the Bill of Rights.

So the good and virtuous people of Le Claire don’t want light, clean industry paying into their tax base? How about if a strip club bids on the property? Wait, that’s too politically incorrect. I know - a gay book store! It’s beautiful, a First amendment protected, oppressed minority business.
Everybody wins, except Les Baer. Tell Les to move to Pennsylvania.

Sheesh! Did those Iowa people eat a bad batch of GMO corn or something? What is wrong with them? Will that sort of nasty rudeness actually convince someone to agree with them?

I live in Iowa, and I’d be more than happy to have them relocate here. Iowa’s like a lot of other states, in that the fascis…er, progressive liberals tend to cluster in the larger (relatively) cities like Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, etc to circle jerk…whoops, to bring enlightenment to the rest of the population that’s conveniently massed near media outlets. Cedar Rapids in just north of the University of Iowa, in the People’s Republic Of Johnson County (Moonbat Central for Iowa) and is deeply infected with “social justice” mentality.
There’s plenty of places in Iowa that would be welcoming to both the income and the products. Maybe he should try the same town that Brownell’s is in. They seem to get along fine with their local MOD.

I can’t believe how stupid people are willing to sound in public.
Don’t they know that Les Baer’s products are already available in their state?
Do they honestly believe that moving the factory there is going to contribute to crime in any way? Are $2000 pistols going to just leak out of the building like ash from a smokestack, showering the crappy neighborhoods with puppy-killing bullet-hoses?
People that stupid should be called out as such.

I’ve been trying to get Springfield Armory to move to Missouri for years. We’ve even got a ‘Springfield’ they can move to - the one where Bass Pro has their world headquarters. Ok, it’s about 4 hours from me up here in KC but it’s right down there in the Ozarks. Heck, there’s even an ammo maker already there (Finnochi?).
They could use the slogan “New Springfield, Same Armory”

All of these firearms companies should be moving south. Southern states tend to embrace guns whether it’s for collecting or hunting. Seems like a lot of northern, midwest, and western states are becoming anti-second ammendment. Georgia is proud to have a little company called Glock located here.

We'’ll gladly take any orphaned firearm manufacturers up here in Wisconsin. Even though we have an anti-gun Governor, our large population of hunters would hopefully not tolerate any nonsense like in Illinois.

y’know, just in case any gun makers’ CEO’s are reading this…
the state of Michigan has a metals manufacturing infrastructure that’s largely going to waste, is generally gun-friendly, still has a few skilled machinists left in it looking for honest work, and wants to expand its industrial base… c’mon over here, y’all!

What kind of an idiot is this guy? Does he even know what he is saying?? Semi-automatics are NOT MILITARY WEAPONS!! Sure they were back in the 40’s and 50’s, but it is the new century and no semi-auto weapon is in any military unless it is for sniping (which is not a form of mass killing but perfectly aimed shots at a target) or ceremonial. And the features of the gun do not make it for mass killing, looks do not affect the gun’s performance whatsoever. He should be smacked for his ignorance and forcing his beliefs down other people’s throats when he really has no idea what he is talking about.

I’m finding myself hating the idiots in Springfield more and more everyday. A state-wide smoking ban is just down the pike, my home state is becoming like California with shitty weather…

I would like for the gun manfactures to find a home in Reynoldsburg,Oh. We are wanting a great company to call us home. We have a great industrial park and the people are very nice. If i lived and had my company in Illinois,i would move it so fast they wouldn’t have to notice. Leave it to the criminals and the Governor and the Mayor.

LES BAER, DSA, SPRINGFIELD, AND ANY OTHER ARMS COMPANIES IN THE PEOPLES REPUBLICS OF IL,MA OR ANY OTHER GUN GRABBING STATE IS MORE THAN WELCOME IN SUNNY FL.
WE HAVE SOME OF THE BEST GUN LAWS IN THE COUNTRY, THE WEATHER IS GREAT, AND WE WILL NEVER TRY AND KICK OUT ANYONE WHO MAKES TOOLS FOR EXERCISING OUR RIGHT TO PROTECT OURSELVES.

I’ll echo KCSteve; we’d welcome Les Baer here in West Plains, MO. We have a nice industrial park just north of town with newly constructed buildings just begging for a good employer with a quality product like Les Baer, Armallite, or Springfield. Sure, the employees might have to move but the climate’s better, we have the Mark Twain forest, several state forests, and national parks for recreation, and the State of Missouri even maintains a nice, free, public range at White Ranch State Forest a few miles south of town where the employees could practice with the products they make.
Les Baer’s products are a valued part of life for many people here. Let the company move here and find out what it’s like to be a welcomed and valued business in the community.

To hell with the stupid libs who would classify slingshots as weapons of mass destruction if they could. I say there is nothing quite as nice as a warm uzi on a cold morning.

I love the earlier comment comparing Illannoy to Kalifornia but with shitty weather! Loved it! Should have added without any scenery as well.
The state of my birth and current residence, Illannoy, has morphed into unrecognizable drek governed by a corps of schmucks. (One almost has to turn to Yiddish … English fails.) Wife and I are hedging our bets and with great financial strain setting up a second “escape” house in the United States, eg Arizona as we speak. Viewing the situation with perspective from afar the scene becomes Kafkaesque. Smoking ban, gun ban, breathtaking corruption, sky high real estate taxes. Perfect.
