NY Times: Blame the U.S. Gun Laws
*Sigh* How’s this for logic?
Drug gangs seek out guns in the United States because the gun-control laws are far tougher in Mexico. Mexican civilians must get approval from the military to buy guns and they cannot own large-caliber rifles or high-powered pistols, which are considered military weapons.
[…]
The gun laws in the United States allow the sale of multiple military-style rifles to American citizens without reporting the sales to the government, and the Mexicans search relatively few cars and trucks going south across their border.
And our new anti-gun Attorney General? He says:
The attorney general also suggested that re-instituting a U.S. ban on the sale of assault weapons would help reduce the bloodshed in Mexico, where last year 6,000 people were killed in drug-related violence.
Well then obviously all those gun control laws in Mexico aren’t working. Come to think of it, all those gun control laws in D.C. and Chicago aren’t working, either, since the thugs and criminals there have plenty of fire power.
There’s just one little thing not mentioned by the Times; all of these gun sales to Mexicans are illegal. ILLEGAL. They’re straw purchases, or sales to non-citizens (the Mexicans) or illegal actions by FFL gun dealers. There are already laws on the books to prevent such stuff but those laws aren’t being enforced — or not enforced with a proper force of agents.
By the way, a big damn fence between Mexico and the U.S. would help a lot as would proper searching of vehicles at border crossings.
What isn’t acceptable, despite claims by the Times and by AG Eric Holder, is for the United States to adjust it’s laws and curtail it’s rights by banning the sale of certain firearms to suit the problems and needs of other countries.
Shall we curtail free speech here in the U.S.? That would certainly make it easier for countries such as China to censure the Internet, ya?
Shall we require all women here to wear burkas so all the Islamic fundamentalists around the world doesn’t have their sensibilities offended when visiting or viewing images of the U.S.? We should probably ban or strip away all gay rights, too, since Muslims aren’t too crazy about that stuff, either.
Shall we just discard our nation’s sovereignty — as the left would like us to do — to placate every piss-in-pot third world country?
Oh, wait! We’re already doing some of that, thanks to the liberal effetes in office. Let’s have a “fairness doctrine.” Let’s curb our Bill of Rights. Let’s coddle our imprisoned terrorist enemies. Let’s have a “path to citizenship” for every damn illegal that slinks across our border.
When are we going to elect some politicians around here that stand up for OUR country? Or, is that asking for just a little too fucking much?

Uh, lighten up. Did you really expect any better from NYT?
If we’re lucky, they will go the way of my local Philadelphia Enquirer (as in bankrupcy).

You think that is frustrating. The local news channels out here in Phoenix are starting to “report” the same type of crap. In the last month or so I’ve heard a couple of “Arizona Gun Laws Should Be Changed To Help Mexico” stories on local tv. God help you if you say anything about putting up a fence of cracking down on the border, because that makes you a xenophobic racist.

I really doubt that these weapons are coming from the U.S. Why don’t the Mexican’s do an inventory of what their military has lost or misplaced in the last several years. Fox News reported that the military was fired on with a bazooka. I don’t think that was bought at Cabela’s.

Same reporting here in San Antonio. The same folks who don’t want to control border access for illegal aliens whine about gun smuggling into Mexico.
Ever think that maybe corrupt Mexican and U.S. law enforcement is assisting in this gun-running?

Not only that, but this is supposedly happening because of “drug related violence.” Since drugs are illegal in both countries, and there is a “drug related violence” problem, what makes anyone thing that making guns illegal will work any better?

Just a tiny nitpick: It’s perfectly legal to sell a firearm to a non-citizen - just not an illegal alien.
(Immigrant aliens have the same firearms rights as citizens; non-immigrant aliens are allowed to purchase and possess firearms and ammunition in specific circumstances [18 U.S.C. 922(g)(5)(A) and (y)(2)] such as being in the US for “lawful hunting or sporting purposes”.)

Good points all:
Only US citizens can buy guns, including at gun shows.
Full auto weapons are already heavily regulated and again not available at gun shows.
Grenades and bazookas are (sadly) also not available in the US at gun shows, already illegal…more laws arent’ going to change a thing except punish the innocent and lawful.

This was a surprise, or even a shock - except for the somewhat snarky NRA reference:
*Pelosi - enforce laws before writing new ones*
“On that score, I think we need to enforce the laws we have right now,” Pelosi said at her weekly news conference.
…
that phrase is the stock line of those who don’t want to pass new gun control laws, such as the National Rifle Association.

OT:
I good friend of mine (not the police, but a big supporter) recently fell upon hard times.
Now the medical bills are rolling in and he is trying to raise money to pay them.
I know alot of people with discretionary income read here, so I hope someone can help him out. I posted the item for him, so I can verify that it’s in mint condition and I will ship it.
Very nice electronic gift for someone who enjoys gaming.
So please go to Ebay and search for item #140303598610.
Thanks in advance.

There is something extremely rotten fish smelling about this. The ATF claims they knew what was going on, that they were investigating, but somehow the gun dealer stayed in business long enough to send at least 600 AK-47’s to Mexico one and two at a time.
Do you believe that? I sure as Hell don’t. Also, where did he get the AK-47’s, they are a foreign manufacture fully automatic firearm. Not importable any more. Also no word about the customers paying the $200 machine gun tax or NFA registering them. Also all the customers passed their background checks. Wouldn’t that imply that the ATF is far more culpable than the owner.
As for the ATF’s statements that their undercover agents told the dealer they were going to resell the guns in Mexico, I simply don’t believe them. Let’s see the tape. Let’s see the guns and their provenance, each and every one. Otherwise, I assume the ATF is still the liars they always were.
My advice to ATF agents;”Get off your mothers and zip up your pants.”

Lack of enforcement is the problem. Aliens (even legal) should not have greater protections when breaking the law than a citizen. Our neighborhood has an Italian green card resident with two hired green card “employees” that patrol his property with weapons, and shoot squirrels, birds and anything else that moves which is illegal in my area. I think he considers it a Sicilian compound. They do not have hunting licenses, and even pointed a gun at a neighboring resident. He is suspected of dealing in stolen property. Of course it is hands off the “alien” with local law enforcement until a person or other property is shot-up. They cannot or will not even verify his alien status. The Feds only respond with a reference from the local law enforcement agency. Exactly who is running this country anyway.
