From the Daily Caller:

Attorney General Eric Holder supported using Hollywood, the media and government officials in order to “really brainwash people” into opposing firearm ownership, according to a 1995 C-SPAN video that emerged Sunday online.

Holder, who was then the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, was addressing the Women’s National Democratic Club on Jan. 30, 1995. In his speech, he held up anti-smoking campaigns as a model for an anti-gun campaign.

“What we need to do is change the way in which people think about guns, especially young people, and make it something that’s not cool, that it’s not acceptable, it’s not hip to carry a gun anymore, in the way in which we’ve changed our attitudes about cigarettes,” Holder said.

We all know that Holder is anti-gun ownership, that he believes in strict gun control, and that Fast and Furious was an operation designed to convince the American people that more gun control was needed, particularly a reinstatement of the so-called “assault weapons” ban. I’ve asked many times here why he still has his job.

Having said that, I’ve watched the video several times and I do think that — in fairness — Holder was speaking about trying to stem the tide of youth and gang violence which was and is a scourge in many inner cities where kids do think it cool to carry and use illegal firearms.

There are, of course, several problems with the methods he proposed in the video. PSA’s (Public Service Announcements on TV and radio) are watched by more than just kids and no doubt the ones that would be created by Holder’s Hollywood pals would make no distinction between legitimate gun ownership (for self-defense, hunting, sporting purposes) and illegal gun possession.

Secondly, enlisting or requiring schools to run anti-gun ownership curriculums would be designed by the NEA, etc., to be so one-sided, so over the top, that — again — no legitimate reason to own firearms would ever be presented. Also, most of these gun-totin’ teen thugs and gang bangers probably don’t spend much time in the classroom anyway.

Better would have been for Holder and company to call for a similar “brainwashing program” that teaches kids that getting an education, a High School diploma, and going on to college or trade school is where it’s at, is the cool thing to do that will lead to a better life for them.
